Thought for December 2018

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” (1 John 3:1-2)

As Christmas approaches, we are reminded again of the wonderful love that our Heavenly Father has showered on us by adopting us, who were unrepentant sinners, as His children. John reminds us that, as if that were not enough, this wonderful love continues on into the future: the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has a destiny for us that is unimaginable. Sufficient for our lives here and now to know that at Jesus Christ’s glorious appearing, we will be transformed to be like him. The gift of the Christ-child’s birth in Bethlehem is the guarantee of this glorious future for those who gratefully receive that lavish love; this is the heart of the Christmas message, so “Come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.”
