'Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry ... When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.' Luke 4:1, 13-14
In the period of Lent we remember Jesus' experience in the wilderness, being tempted by the devil. But Luke bookends Jesus' temptation experience with references to the Spirit who both led him into the wilderness, and empowered Him as He resisted temptation and came out of the wilderness. May we too know the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in our temptations, and lean on His strength, not our own, to resist them.
