“I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ” (Philemon 1:6).
The New Testament is clear that the Christian life is incomprehensible outside a community of believers. That is not to say that someone cannot follow Jesus on their own, but rather to stress that the expectation is that following Jesus is best done with others. In this briefest of his letters, Paul acknowledges that partnership with others in the gospel is more than a good or pleasant idea: it actually develops and strengthens our own understanding of what God in Jesus Christ has done. Perhaps we could go further and suggest that when we do not partner with others our vision of the wonderful work of God is limited and poorer. May you be those who partner with others as you partner with us, so that all might grow in knowledge and appreciation of the wonderful saving work of our gracious Lord and King.
Yours in Christ,
