Thought for August 2022

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

What is “rest”? In today’s leisure-oriented culture we often understand it as a pause from work, to restore us for more work. But in this well-known and beloved saying of Jesus “rest” comprises work measured and moderated by Jesus’ pace and rhythm. The rest he offers is a rest from perfectionism and the praise of man, being driven by self or others. To rest is not to be unyoked but to be appropriately—perfectly, rather—yoked with Jesus for what is, after all, his work and his glory. May you know what it is to walk and minister at Jesus’ rhythm and in his way.

Yours in our Lord Jesus Christ,

The Müllers Prayer Team
