“He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honour. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and on them he has set the world”
1 Samuel 2:8
Hannah’s song of praise is a declaration of the way in which God has ordered the world and a bold assertion of how He intends it to be. Yet, it is hard to read this and not be plagued by a nagging doubt: why do we not see the poor elevated to honour as much as we might expect?
The two books of Samuel show us how it can happen: sometimes God acts sovereignly, such as raising up David from shepherd to king, but sometimes he waits for us to play our part in showing his loving-kindness to the marginalised and overlooked, as when David seeks out Mephibosheth, and brings him into his palace.
Let us be those who pray that God would continue to lift up the needy from the ash-heap, and let us be those who do not tire of playing our part in raising the poor from the dust.
Yours in our Lord Jesus Christ,
