“He has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27 The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:28-29)
We confess and sing that God is in charge, and we’re called to trust in His wise and careful upholding of His creation. The Bible teaches us about this Providence of God, but it’s a hard belief to properly grasp because we live in a world that has been “tamed” to a great extent, and this leads us to the mistaken thinking that medicine, wealth, government, liberal values, etc. are in charge. Although everything else may be shaken, God’s faithfulness and His ways and His coming Kingdom are sure beneath us. So let’s continue in our acceptable, reverent and appropriately awe-filled worship of God our Father, His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
