“A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham.” (Matthew 1:1)
Right at the start of the Gospel according to Matthew, which is right at the start of the New Testament, Matthew connects Jesus to two of the central figures of the Old Testament, right back in the mists of time and long-held hope. As the son of David, Jesus is the rightful King, not just of the Jews but of the whole world. As the son of Abraham, Jesus is the seed of Abraham through whom God’s promise to “bless all the nations of the world” will come to fruitful fulfilment. As our fast-paced and frenetic Western world turns its eyes to the gluttonous consumerism into which it has distorted Christmas, let us remember that Christmas is about God’s gracious and good gift of Jesus, who rightly is good news for the whole world.
