“I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfils his purpose for me.” (Psalm 57:2)
We can easily become discouraged as we look at our lives, for the process of discipleship can seem imperceptibly slow. However, the Scriptures will not allow such an attitude of despair. The God whom we worship and into whose delightful presence the death and resurrection of Jesus has opened a new and living way is this Most high God who, as David declares, will fulfil His purpose for us. For all of us, that purpose is to be conformed more and more to the pattern of our Lord Jesus Christ. Reflecting on this Psalm is perhaps what lay behind Paul’s confidence that ‘he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus,’ (Phil 1:6). Let us share in that confidence and rejoice that God’s purpose for us in this is unstoppable.
