Mixing with the Youth |
|
The Mix is a monthly youth event, sponsored by Müller's as a partner. Here are a few stories to highlight last term's meetings.
"We are packing out Woodlands most months, seeing over 400 young people from across Bristol and beyond joining together to worship God. We have over 40 churches represented across many different denominations.
A church leader from one of the villages outside of Bristol felt moved to bring his young people to the Mix. He wasn't sure whether or not they would like it, because they didn't seem particularly engaged with faith in the church. But he brought them and they did like it, inasmuch as they were curious about what the others were experiencing and wanted to find out more. Off the back of their intrigue, he began a Youth Alpha course which had a good take-up. He ran the Holy Spirit day and was blown away to see the young people, many of whom had very little discernable interest in faith, experiencing the presence and power of God first hand.
We've also been pushing a few boundaries recently. The Mix fell on Easter Sunday this year so we wanted to do something to help young people really get to grips with what it's all about. Rather than having a traditional preach, we led a multi-media meditative worship journey through the experience of the cross and then celebrated what Jesus' resurrection means to each of us. It was a really great evening with loads of young people experiencing the presence of God in a new way. We were also joined by up and coming Christian band 'A Kiss Goodbye' for a special after hours gig, as part of their UK tour.
We've also seen more young people getting involved in the Mix. Colse Leung is doing a great job supporting young worship leaders from churches around Bristol who join the band. We regularly have young people sharing testimony of what God is doing and has done as part of the evening. Last month, Ruth (17) did a great job envisioning the young congregation in how they can get practically involved in standing against injustice. As a team we're keen to see more young people given the opportunity to develop their gifts and calling and are discussing how we can further this.
We contine to address a variety of topics in our preaches. Recent topics that the Mix have covered include:
- What is marriage and how do I do dating well?
- 'Big Questions' - our Mix panel answers those difficult questions you have about faith
- Why do we worship?
- Responding to injustice - particularly human trafficking, including on our doorstep.
Next term we are doing 'The Big Story' - looking at God at work in the past, the present and the future. We also have an up-to-date website...
